How a Positive Work Culture Can Actually Transform Your Business and Help it Thrive

Positive Work Culture

When people ask me for tips on making their businesses better or more profitable, they’re often surprised when I tell them to focus on creating a positive work culture and make any changes needed to ensure a more respectful and flexible workplace. But here’s the thing- and it’s actually very simple- if your employees feel heard, valued, proud of the work you’re doing, and don’t dread going into work, they’ll be more productive. They’ll also produce more quality work, and their happiness at work will yield more workplace positivity all-around. It’s like a self-sustaining non-misery machine, and it can make or break your business.

But before we dive right in, welcome! You’ve now entered into The Dreamer’s Lounge! I’m Ariel Schiffer, and I have made it my mission to take out the digital trash one bad course at a time. I am the creator of The Course Alchemist, Industrial Organizational Psychologist, and Curriculum and course design expert.

This podcast is for entrepreneurs who are looking to elevate their digital product suite so their offers speak for themselves. Nothing is worse than being oversold into something that under-delivers just like an overpriced bottle of wine. So, if you’re ready to develop high-quality offers, bring in consistent revenue, and have a business with long-term results for you AND your clients, grab your drink and join us inside…

Ask the Employees…and Then Really Listen

I regularly ask my employees about the things they appreciate about our work environment, and their feedback helps shape things moving forward. A few things they really valued are the sense of humor in the workplace as well as motivation to grow and develop in their fields (and sometimes outside of them) and autonomy granted to them at work.

Checking in with your employees periodically gives you a good idea about the headspace they’re in both individually and as a group, and can help you make adjustments where needed to foster an environment of trust and motivation while honoring the inherent human need for joy and rest.

Hire with Discernment

The hiring process is crucial when curating the vibes in your office/ on your team. While resumes are important and you obviously want someone who fulfills at least some of the requirements on your job listing, it’s also important to hire someone who you feel would be a good fit personality-wise. While interviewing I often look for a person who I’d want to be around; someone who above all shows they are passionate and eager to learn and contribute.

It’s also a great idea to have a designated mentor or point person for new employees to come to for help and guidance. This helps everyone feel supported and makes sure the new hire is receiving accurate and consistent feedback.

Be a Leader, Not a Dictator: The Bottomline

When my people approached me to try out a 4 day work week, my team and I looked into it and found a way to try it out. It’s one of the best things we’ve done in terms of work-life balance and prioritizing tasks in order of importance.

I also make sure to be the burnout police, and monitor my team looking for signs they’re getting worn out; this is because I care about my team more as people, not employees. On top of that, working your people to the bone is horrible for productivity and quality of work.

This is the part of the job I hate, but if you’re a boss that means you have to have a keen eye for hiring, but you also have to be able to let people go if it turns out that they’re not actually a good fit. It might be uncomfortable, but everyone benefits from making sure that your work culture is made up of people who contribute complementary energies- including the person who needs to be cut loose. It’s like a break-up; they suck but ultimately it’s no one’s fault, it just didn’t work out.
