My story with instructional design.

So I have almost 10 years of experience in instructional design. I went to college for industrial-organizational psychology and I even got my master's in it.

After that, I went on to work in the corporate world where I did a bunch of learning and development for all different types of companies.

That wasn't really working out so that's when I started my business as a career coach and then ended up transitioning into a course creator for other entrepreneurs. When looking at my story, it hit me that people REALLY need to understand the purpose of instructional design.

We need to look at why it's important, why it's needed, and how it's going to boost revenue.

Defining instructional design and what being a course creator is all about.

Instructional design is really just the practice of systematically designing, developing, and delivering instructional products through digital or physical content. It is the art and science of creating the BEST learning experiences.

It bothers me to no end seeing people teach instructional design when they don't even know what it is themselves. They see one result happen with their business and they try to go out and teach it.

There's a difference between knowing how to market a course and knowing how to create a course. So many people focus on marketing rather than creating a quality product.

As a course creator, your goals are to inspire, change mindsets, and change behaviors. It's very crucial that you keep these things in mind:

  • The different ways people learn.
  • How to best structure your content to be consumed.
  • How to best execute your designs.
  • How to encourage people to stay engaged.

Boost revenue through your courses.

Let’s get one thing straight, if your course is designed well, it's going to provide you with that long-term revenue.

People have expectations from you if they are paying a certain amount of money. With that being said, I really want to encourage you to create your programs with INTENTION

Here are some quick ways you can do this:

  1. Knowing your audience like they're your best friend.
  2. Follow a structured methodology for creating your curriculum so you can plan ahead.
  3. Spend time being strategic with how you share your content.
  4. Create visuals that are aesthetically pleasing versus distracting.
  5. Have an evaluation strategy to capture feedback and testimonials.
  6. Update your program continuously.
